Importance of extracurriculara

Hi! I'm preparing for summer 2026 internship recruitment (undergrad) and am wondering how much extracurriculars matter. I am pretty involved in three clubs on campus (along with having internships and other professional experiences) but am worried that that's not enough especially because only one is consulting oriented. If anyone has any insights into how much extracurriculars matter in recruitment please let me know!

Extracurriculars can play a significant role in recruitment, but their importance often depends on how you leverage them. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Demonstrating Leadership and Impact: Admissions and recruiters value extracurriculars where you’ve taken on leadership roles or made a tangible impact. For example, planning events, recruiting/training others, or driving initiatives within your clubs can showcase your leadership potential and ability to contribute meaningfully.

  2. Diversity of Involvement: While having one consulting-oriented club is great, it’s not necessary for all your extracurriculars to align directly with consulting. Recruiters also look for well-rounded candidates who are interesting and bring diverse experiences to the table. Club sports, debate, or other activities can highlight your teamwork, communication, and time management skills.

  3. Quality Over Quantity: It’s better to have a few meaningful extracurriculars where you’ve made a significant impact than to spread yourself too thin across many. Highlight the depth of your involvement and the results you’ve achieved in your resume and interviews.

  4. Professional Section Strength: Since you already have internships and professional experiences, your extracurriculars can complement these by showcasing your personality, interests, and leadership outside of work. This balance can make you a more compelling candidate.

In summary, your current involvement in three clubs, combined with your professional experiences, seems like a solid foundation. Focus on emphasizing leadership, impact, and how these activities align with the skills consulting firms value.
