Assuming you're asking in context of getting an entry level position in a consulting firm out of college, somebody who knows you well and cares about you will make a significant difference in terms of you actually getting pushed through, but I don't think there'e any reason you'd have to tradeoffs between "depth and breadth" for the type of networking needed for entry level consulting
Definitely depth. Stop pinging everyone in the office just to get facetime (as someone on the other side of this, it's annoying). Develop a few good relationships with people who will pull you through the process.
