Is networking more of a requirement when you don't have any affiliation to the office/region you apply to?

Rising junior from the midwest attending a semi target on the west coast but am interested in Chicago/NYC/DC offices for all firms. Does networking become more important/expected in this scenario to make R1 interviews?

“He was very friendly and helpful throughout the session. He provided a lot of practical advice on how to approach coffee chats with consultants. We also did a quick mock coffee chat, during which he gave me detailed and constructive feedback on the types of questions I could ask, how to follow up on responses, and how to explore topics in greater depth. “Matt was great-- he provided lots of good feedback on my resume and clarified some confusions I had on the experience section vs the leadership/activities one which i found very helpful, not only today, but just for the future in general.
