Management Consulting Recruiting as Rising Senior

Hello everyone I am currently a junior standing at a non target school, studying for a dual degree in Finance and Accounting, with an additional major in Business Management and a minor in Business Analytics (essentially a triple major with two degrees.)  This past summer, I interned for 8 weeks at a smaller wealth management firm- The role was essentially a glorified spin off of Northwestern Mutual FR internship. Good experience and networking with all the individuals in the small office, however not much hands on experience for a lot of it was training. The whole entire program was essentially a fast tracked internship program to become a full time advisor, and I really didn't reap any benefits since I still have 2 years left of school. After that 8 week internship, I realized it wasn't for me, and I didn't want to deal with hundreds of individuals and also hated the stigma surrounding the industry. I then began to direct sights to new horizons within finance. Going to a non target, I knew that getting into a high finance role was almost completely off the table. Therefore, I set my sights on a solidified corporate finance role, with the goal of doing that for a few years and then try to break into a boutique PE firm. In doing this, I have secured a summer internship at a very large appliance company doing corporate finance. However the whole internship is structed around finding a business problem and deriving a solution. In other words, it is essentially an 11 week interview to see if you are fit for a full time rotational program, in which they will teach you the ins and outs of the main financial functions in the company and also pay for your MBA.  Additionally, I am working on and, if everything goes right, will secure a part time Spring internship in another corporate finance role at a large firm headquarted in my college town that does about 2 billion in revenue. With this and the summer internship, along with solid extracurricular activity at my University, and some managerial positions in food service, I feel that I would have a very strong resume for a solid corporate finance job out of undergrad, or maybe a role in an even better sector. Recently, a friend of mine has been going through management consulting recruiting for a summer internship, and just landed one in NYC. While he has been going through the whole process, I have learned a great deal about the recruitment process and overall breaking into the industry. The biggest thing I learned is how different the recruiting is from IB- almost everyone needs to get an internship first in IB before coming on full time, while in consulting its almost the opposite- most firms recruit more for full time roles than internships. This then got me to thinking if I should try to break into consulting out of undergrad for a full time role, since I still have a lot of time on my hand.  I know generally how the recruitment process works with casing and all, but I am a little unclear as to how networking plays a role, if any. I seriously think I would enjoy the role, for you are constantly learning and exposed to new types of industries and projects. I also love to travel, and although I know you are not always going to LA or Phoenix, I still think I would enjoy it. Additionally, the compensation is great, and the hours are not nearly as bad as other high finance roles. Ultimately, I think being in consulting for a few years would drastically increase my exit opportunities compared to a solid role in corporate finance, although I am unsure.  I would love to hear feedback on what you guys think about my thought process here. I do have a high analytic mind, so I'm wondering if that would translate well into a more qualitative industry. I know coming from a non target I have virtually no chance at MBB, or maybe even Big 4 for that matter. However, I know there are still smaller firms out there that offer very similar roles that still have all the benefits that I would be looking for. Before I begin to start casing and really taking this serious, I would like to know if any of this is feasible, or if I should go a different route. I think that after the summer, and pending my spring internship, I would have a very solid resume. I know that I am capable of casing and becoming good at it as well, and I have networking experience and can handle that aspect too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I have a 3.6 currently, with anticipation of having a 3.7 by recruitment next Fall

just because you are from a non target does not mean you have no chance @ mbb or big 4. i know several people from non target large public state schools at mbb. definitely network with people at the office you want to apply to and try to get referrals
