McKinsey Reapplication Ban

Hi all,

Quick question for those familiar with McKinsey recruiting policies:

If you apply and don’t make it past interviews, there’s typically a 12–18 month reapplication ban. But is there any flexibility on that? For example, if you show significant improvement (internship, leadership roles, stronger referral), is there a chance of getting an exception to reapply earlier?

I’m debating whether to apply now with a referral but limited prep time — or wait and apply in the next cycle with a stronger profile. Trying to weigh the risk of triggering the ban vs. taking the shot now.

Any firsthand experience or insight would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!
