No Brand Name--How Do I Compensate?
I've heard that if your resume doesn't have a solid brand-name company (F 500, VC, or PE) that it will be tossed out from the start of the application process. How would you suggest compensating for a lack of major internship "spike" in these areas? Showing impact, good academics, and club involvement are the typical answers, but what really gets you over the edge?
Networking. Which is arguably just as important/more important than everything else you've listed above. Networking and practicing case interviews with employees (and crushing them) will almost always get you an interview at Bain and BCG. McKinsey is much more focused on resume so that's going to be a stretch.
Im looking to break into these firms with my first internship being with Uber as a M&A Finance Intern. Is that brand name enough to break through for an interview?
