Follow up by email in 1-2 weeks. If they say to keep checking in, then do that, otherwise wait 2 months and email again. I don't really think there's anything more you can do since they want you for the job, all other circumstances aside.

Is the experienced hire role for a client facing job or is it for a knowledge team? If the former, then there is a small chance you can convince them to move you to a generalist role. For the latter, they have very different candidate criteria selection and I wouldn't count on it.
