In this post-COVID world, prepping for a consulting role out of undergrad requires a mix of traditional preparation and adapting to new trends like AI. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can prepare effectively:

1. Skillset Boost

  • Excel & PowerPoint Mastery: These are non-negotiable in consulting. Consider taking consulting-oriented courses in Excel, PowerPoint, and even tools like Tableau or Alteryx, as they are increasingly relevant.
  • AI & Data Analytics: Familiarize yourself with AI tools and data analytics platforms. Understanding how to leverage AI for problem-solving can set you apart.
  • Case Interview Prep: Use resources like WSO’s Consulting Case Interview Prep to practice frameworks and problem-solving techniques.

2. Stay Updated

  • Business News: Stay informed about industry trends, especially how AI is reshaping consulting. The situation evolves rapidly, so make it a habit to follow business news weekly.
  • Podcasts: Look for consulting-focused podcasts that discuss current trends and challenges in the industry.

3. Books & Resources

  • Books: Classic consulting books like Case in Point by Marc Cosentino are still relevant. Additionally, explore books on AI and its impact on business strategy.
  • Websites: Wall Street Oasis (WSO) forums are a goldmine for advice, templates, and insights from experienced consultants.

4. Networking

  • Build relationships with current consultants and alumni from your school. They can provide insights into the evolving consulting landscape and help you navigate your first few months.

5. Mindset & Preparation

  • Mental Math & Problem Solving: Practice mental math and structured thinking. These are critical for case interviews and on-the-job problem-solving.
  • Adaptability: Consulting is a business of people and relationships. Be ready to adapt to new tools, industries, and challenges.

By combining these strategies, you’ll be well-prepared to excel in your consulting role. And remember, even seasoned consultants are navigating this new AI-driven world, so stay curious and proactive!

Please please please take an excel course. You will learn to make good pages on the job (and you can’t really prep in advance because firms have custom macros and shortcuts), but excel is the same everywhere. Have been appalled by how many really smart consultants can’t use excel to save their lives, and it is often poorly taught (if at all) in training at many firms
