Recruitment Timeline

Hey all, I know that I'm probably quite late to the game with this one. I'm currently a sophomore at a semi-target and I have recently taken an interest in strategy/consulting. I have been looking online for internships and recruitment timelines and can't seem to get a clear picture.

I tried my hand in investment banking during the first part of the semester, but ultimately figured out that it wasn't for me. I know that in IB sophomores are currently recruiting for their summer '27 internships. I recently saw on LinkedIn that a junior just landed a summer '26 internship, which makes me think that I have some time to join more clubs, get more leadership positions, case competitions, etc. to boost my resume. Do consulting firms recruit the fall before the summer as opposed to two years prior like investment banks?

Any other general advice would be greatly appreciated.

Be ready by sophomore summer for junior internship apps; junior summer for full-time. Can open as early as July or as late as October, depending on whether they do two rounds

just look at past MBB deadlines. MBB goes during the summer, other firsm in the fall. You should probably start prepping like two months before should be good? Network a bit before too though its not a make or break like in banking. Moreso so u can speak well in interviews. Resume is the most important for consulting to get an interview

You are not late at all. Didn't decide on consulting until August of my sophomore summer, but still got a junior year MBB offer from the second deadline.

Deadlines are usually 6-12 months before start date. If you wanted to recruit for Summer 2027, recruiting starts at earliest April/May 2026 (I think Oliver Wyman has their deadline this early) and then stretches all the way to the start date (so think May 2027), but tbh no quality firms will be giving offers that close to the start date. The busiest time for 2027 is probably the June-December stretch of 2026.

I will say though to not despair if nothing quality comes through early. There's a lot of well-paying boutiques that have later hiring cycles because they don't have as stable demand as the bigger firms.

More than happy to answer q's

Yes, I networked, although it was very light as I talked to one entry-level person at each firm (Associate/Associate Consultant/Business Analyst). Networking only really helpful though for getting information (staffing model, office culture, travel frequency), as referrals from that level of employee doesn't get you far.

Yes, I came from a target, but I wouldn't read too much into that though. About 20-30% of my intern class came from non-targets, and I think there's a lot of selection bias that goes on where kids from targets tend to have better resumes, interviewing skills, resources, and connections.
