Rescheduling R1 Due to Another R2 Superday

I have a superday R2 interview in the office at one company and have R1 scheduled for the same day at a different company. I realized that I cannot get to the R1 interview in time after getting more detailed info about the superday. The R1 interview is on campus, and the sessions are scheduled through only one day. Firms are similar in terms of prestige/etc, and obviously I have higher chances at the first one. My question is how should I go about rescheduling the R1 interview for a different day? Should I explicitly tell HR that I have a different interview the whole day, or just say I am busy and be vague (both in a polite way of course)?

I would opt for a vague reason relating to a personal or family matter. If I were in this position, I would probably say,

"Hello x

I understand I had been scheduled to interview at your firm on X day between #:00 - #:00, but I have an unforeseen family matter to attend to at that time. I apologize for the inconvenience, but would it be possible to reschedule the interview to another time within the availability below?

My availability is as follows:

  • Time - Date, Year
  • Time - Date, Year
  • Time - Date, Year

I understand the firm is attending campus for the entirety of the day, I am more than willing to come to the firm office location to conduct the interview or hold the interview over a virtual environment if that's more convenient for the interviewers.

Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
