Shops that let you live wherever

Hey everybody,

Looking for some help from the consulting community on firms that let their consultants live in the city they want while still traveling Mon-Thurs.

Me: I work in equity research (~18 months now), CFA level III candidate, and simply want to move back home where there is not much high profile jobs. I think consulting would be a great gig for a few years with quite a bit of direct skill overlap.

Any information on firms, this career switch, or helpful pointers would be appreciated. If anyone would be willing to offer advice/info via. phone that'd be even better.

Thanks guys

A lot of consultants can potentially live "wherever" as long as they begin their careers in a major city. It takes time to develop an internal network and for the firm to get a good sense of how valuable you are as a resource, but then you can often commute from smaller cities to your projects if you choose to move.

However, being in a smaller city with less business activity will limit your career to a degree. When it comes to rubbing elbows with potential clients and developing accounts you may find yourself sort of on an island.

VincentGambini -- Thanks, is it common for consultants that live in a major city to opt to fly from client sites to their home town most weekends? For reference, my home is actually in the top 30 largest cities pop wise, its just not NYC, Chicago, LA, etc. (more like Nashville, Saint Louis size), but any firms you'd suggest looking at?

@username_1" -- Congrats to your buddy and thanks, I liked some of Huron's postings (particularly restructuring) but looked like they wanted experienced hires with >3 years experience. Do you know what area your buddy joined?.. interested if he could add more color to their hiring process/groups. Thanks
