Obviously small and fast growing companies can't typically afford to hire a large firm. But at what point (market cap?$1B?, $10B?) do companies tend to become clients?

it depends on the scope of the project
i was at a ~$1B company last summer that was deeply in debt and we considered BCG for nearly every project
although a note would be that we never actually picked them to run the projects, but not sure if that was cost motivated
PE funds quite often hire consulting firms to do operational work on their portfolio companies, and they can be quite small ($1B annual revenue)
