spring insight vs summer intern

hi! i'm an upcoming 2nd year out of 4 year course. im looking to apply for summer interns next summer, i applied for insight last year but got rejected (sadly). however i realized that most companies do want 2/4th years to apply for their insight instead of summer internships so now im confused on what i should apply for, ultimately its better if i apply for summer ofc but they want a penultimate year student, so that'll be 3/4th year for me. are they very strict about it? Will i get rejected right from the get go? Would love to hear advice

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Spring insight programs are typically designed for first- and second-year students (in a 4-year course) to give them an introduction to the industry and the firm. These programs are often a stepping stone to securing summer internships later on. However, summer internships are more competitive and are generally targeted at penultimate-year students (3rd year in a 4-year course).

If you're currently in your 2nd year, applying for summer internships might be challenging as many firms are strict about targeting penultimate-year students. That said, there are exceptions, especially at smaller firms or boutiques, which may be more flexible with their requirements. Additionally, some larger firms might allow 2nd-year students to apply for summer internships, but this is less common.

Here’s what you can do: 1. Apply Strategically: Focus on spring insight programs for now, as they are tailored for your current academic stage. These programs can help you build connections and position yourself for a summer internship in your 3rd year. 2. Network Aggressively: Use the insight program rejections as a learning experience. Start networking with professionals at the firms you're targeting. Networking can sometimes help bypass strict application filters. 3. Target Smaller Firms: Smaller or regional firms may not have as rigid requirements for summer internships. These can be great opportunities to gain experience and build your resume. 4. Prepare for Next Year: If you don’t secure a summer internship this year, focus on gaining relevant experience in a related field (e.g., finance, accounting, or research). This will strengthen your application for next year.

While it’s unlikely you’ll be outright rejected for applying as a 2nd-year student, your chances might be lower for summer internships at major firms. Prioritize insight programs and smaller firms for now, and use this year to build your profile for the future.
