Stern for MBB consulting
I got into Stern as a transfer, but I also heard that Stern is not a target for MBB, from students there. Is this true? I also have the option of McCombs and Cornell non-Dyson, so would these two be stronger than Stern for MBB? What about PM?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Stern for MBB Consulting:
While NYU Stern is a heavy target for investment banking, its status as a target for MBB (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) is less clear. Some students and alumni have noted that Stern does not have as strong a consulting presence compared to other schools. However, consulting firms, including MBB, do recruit at Stern, though it may not be as robust as at other top-tier schools.
Comparison with McCombs and Cornell (non-Dyson):
Between these options, the choice depends on your target location and personal fit. Stern's NYC location offers proximity to major consulting offices, which could be advantageous.
Product Management (PM):
For PM roles, Stern's NYC location and strong business curriculum could provide excellent networking opportunities, especially with tech companies and startups in the area. McCombs might also be a strong contender for PM roles, particularly in the tech-heavy Austin area.

No, Stern is a target for MBB. It's not one of the big feeders, but I'd say it does have target status. I think the misconception probably stems from the fact that Stern is a better feeder into IB/finance?
MBB will for sure be holding OCR, networking/fireside/coffee chats, etc.
I'd say Cornell has a stronger status for being a national target, and MBB will recruit across the entire institution --- not just Dyson.
McCombs is a strong regional target but probably better if you're targeting a TX office.
Do pay some consideration to NYU Stern though. Location and non-Consulting options are probably better from there.
