Coming up, I have an interview with Houlihan Lokey’s Strategic Consulting division. I applied for a Consultant role earlier this month. Most people know HL for their investment banking & financial services, however they have a small consulting branch that specializes in strategy & operations. I believe it has only been around since 2015.
Does anyone have any experience working in / interviewing with this part of the company? How does HL Strategic Consulting compare to other reputable firms (i.e., MBB, Big 4, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your insight!

I didn't even know they had it. TBH, I don't think they would be comparable to other firms in this sector simply because I assume almost all of their revenue and expertise is directed at their banking operations. It also isn't reputable/strong enough to let the HL carry you alone. Firms like Finalta can because they have the McKinsey name (or other big firm) name behind them even if it isn't the group's core offering.
If you want to go into MC I would pick the others you mentioned or operations boutiques like Huron or Marakon
Thanks for the advice. I am considering getting into Investment Banking after grad school, so I'm thinking working at a firm like Houlihan Lokey (via strategic consulting) could be a good way to make connections and get "my foot in the door" for future IB work. However, I agree that it isn't as competitive as a firm like Bain, Deloitte, Accenture, etc. for pure consulting.
If that's the intended path I dare say going first to an IB boutique may be more useful as you'll learn more transferrable IB-related skills.
Having interned at HL, they are not very receptive to transferring internally after the internship. One of my friends tried going from their valuations group to IB and almost had his offer recinded. Be careful of relying on that. I would agree, going to a boutique IB would be more relevant than this role for your goals
any idea how large the group is?
That's a good question, I will find out when I talk on the phone with them. I can't imagine it's more than 50-100 people in the U.S. The consulting branch sounds small but selective (they are one of the only one-stop shops to offer both investment banking & strategic consulting services).
When I was there (in the past two summers) they were in the 25-50 range. I would say closer to 25 if I had to be more specific

Make your post less specific. You've identified the title of the person (may only be a few of those since you say its a small group) and the approximate time of the interview. If there are any other markers in this thread it could be easy for the interviewer to figure out who posted this.
