T2 -> MBB lateral? Seeking Career Advice

I recently landed offers at T2 while striking out on all MBB despite making final rounds for a few. Grateful for the offers and will be signing soon but curious if it would be worth it to lateral after 1-2 years for better pivot opportunities? If so, would it be better to lateral with 1 or 2 years of work exp(w a promotion). My goal is to either pivot to tech (internal strategy) or tech PE. I don't want to do consulting for more than 3 years.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, lateraling from a T2 consulting firm to MBB can be a strategic move, especially if your long-term goal is to pivot into tech (internal strategy) or tech PE. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Timing of the Lateral Move:

    • 1 Year of Experience: Moving after one year might be challenging as MBB typically values demonstrated performance and progression. Without a promotion, you may not stand out as much compared to other lateral candidates.
    • 2 Years of Experience with a Promotion: This is generally a stronger position to lateral. A promotion signals strong performance and growth potential, making you a more attractive candidate for MBB.
  2. Value of MBB for Your Goals:

    • MBB experience is highly regarded for pivoting into tech strategy or tech PE. The brand name, alumni network, and exposure to high-impact projects can significantly enhance your profile for these roles.
    • Even a short stint (2 years) at MBB can provide a strong foundation and open doors to top-tier exit opportunities.
  3. Challenges of Lateraling:

    • Lateral hires at MBB are less common, especially at the Associate level. You may need to demonstrate exceptional performance and a clear rationale for the move.
    • MBB may require you to start at the same level (e.g., Associate), even if you’ve been promoted at your T2 firm. While this might feel like a step back, the long-term benefits of the MBB brand often outweigh this short-term trade-off.
  4. Alternative Path:

    • If lateraling to MBB doesn’t work out, you can still pivot to tech or tech PE directly from your T2 firm. Focus on building relevant skills, networking, and gaining exposure to projects aligned with your target industries.

In summary, lateraling to MBB after 2 years with a promotion is likely the better option if you’re aiming for stronger pivot opportunities. However, even without an MBB lateral, a well-planned exit from T2 can still lead to success in tech or tech PE.

I agree with the above sentiment that you may not even need to lateral for good exits, but I think it’s undeniably true that MBB exits are on average  better than T2. With that said, I think the longer you spent at MBB the better so if you can lateral after one year then you should.

Some things to consider:

  1. The MBB lateral door is open in hot markets / boom times. It's feasible and many leave from T2 to MBB when the door is open, but it may not be open if the market is down at the same time when you are in the right tenure window (year 2-3)
  2. The move does make more sense for you since you are planning on leaving to PE or tech anyway. If you were planning to stay longer than 3 years you should weigh the risk of restarting at a new firm, new internal network, and new processes against the trajectory you already have (top performer at T2 is still very lucrative and you benefit internally from halo effect)
  3. Consider practice area limitations. Some firms like Bain are pure generalist while some T2s are structured from Day 1 around industry practice areas. While I agree overall the MBB brands are stronger (e.g. Bain Tech), the tradeoff between generalist MBB and specialization in your area of interest at a T2 is less clear, particularly if you are a strong performer and get the "best" projects at T2 all in a single industry that will make you very capable and perhaps more competitive finding exits than the MBB stamp on more random studies

Tech PE - yes worth the switch given how prestige-driven PE is but mind the geography especially if Bain. Just be sure PE is what you want

Otherwise no a lateral isn’t really worth it and doesn’t change much IMO, esp. if you’re not explicitly angling for Partner (and want to leave within a few years as a Sr Analyst / Associate)

Fwiw was @ MBB, saw someone else make the switch from T2 to MBB. It was worth it for him as the progression is faster and he’s on Partner track
