Transfer to Schools with Better Recruiting?
I go to a school that's probably considered a semi-target for IB, but no MBB recruiting and some Big 4 consulting recruiting. I'll be a sophomore this year, and am wondering if applying for junior transfer to some consulting targets would be worth it. I've read that b-school and career opportunities are much better coming out of a MBB for a consulting career path. Of course its really tough to get into, but that small chance is more than what I'd have at my current school. Should I try to transfer to more of a target school? Would I be at any disadvantage as a junior transfer considering most consulting full time recruiting happens senior year after I'm at a school for a year? Wondering if anyone here has done or thought about doing something similar, and whether you are happy or regret your choice.
Yeah I don't have direct experience with this, but I would say that I have noticed that consulting is much more concerned with where you went to school. It seems a lot harder to network into a MBB consulting firm than it is to network into IB.
So it definitely could be worth it. But there are too many outside factors for someone on a forum to tell you if transferring to brand new school will be worth it for you.
Yeah I was quite surprised cause I thought IB was selective in the schools they recruit from, but I checked the MBB websites and my school wouldn't even show up on 2/3 university searches and the third had it, but no recruiter contact info or event info. In comparison, for BB IB, 4/8 solidly recruit at my school and the rest take a few too each year.
Of course the social and personal effects of transferring are more of my issue than something a forum can say. But I meant worth it more in terms of the recruitment itself. Like transferring would mean I wouldn't have four year involvement/leadership positions in clubs, start networking with a whole new alumni base, and having a lot of my resume related to my old school. I was just wondering if there were people here that did transfer during undergrad and how they faced those hurdles.
Yeah makes sense. Honestly in terms of recruiting for MBB it seems like the brand name school would outweigh extracurriculars and even internships. Hopefully someone with personal experience can shed some light.
I transferred to a target school for better consulting recruiting. Would recommend—just don't expect to be successful during internship recruitment. You won't have the network that non-transfers have, the club involvements, nor a GPA from the transfer school during recruitment.
Just make you get the best internship that your semi-target has to offer for sophomores.
Thanks for responding. I was under the impression that consulting internships are very hard to get and most roles are filled with full time recruiting senior year rather than with interns. I would at least have a year to network and get a GPA by then, right?
Also, did you transfer going into your sophomore or junior year? I would be applying for junior transfer, if that makes a difference.
