Undergraduate Consulting Internship Recruiting

Hi I’m currently a sophomore at a west coast uni and interested in getting into consulting. I am wondering how to best prepare as I currently don’t know a lot about the recruiting process.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there, future consultant! It's great to see your enthusiasm. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are a few pointers to help you prepare:

  1. Start Networking: Connect with alumni from your school who are in the consulting field. They can provide valuable insights and might help you get your foot in the door.

  2. Internships: Aim for internships that have high impact or are associated with big names. They don't necessarily have to be in consulting, but they should add value to your profile.

  3. Case Practice: Start practicing case studies. This is a crucial part of the consulting interview process, and the earlier you start, the better.

  4. Broaden Your Horizons: While it's great to have a dream company like McKinsey, it's also wise to consider other big names like Bain and BCG. The competition is fierce, and casting a wider net increases your chances.

  5. Understand the Landscape: Get to know the consulting landscape, the firms, and what they do. This will not only help you during interviews but also let you figure out which firm's culture and working style suits you best.

Remember, the journey to becoming a consultant is a marathon, not a sprint. So take your time, prepare well, and don't forget to enjoy the process. Good luck!
