What helped you get your first consulting internship?

Hey guys!

I'm doing a Master in Management at a target B-school in Europe. I want to apply for SA roles next year. I'm not too stringent on MBB. I plan to use the Crafting Cases 7-day fundamental course and RocketBlocks for case preparation. We also have free access to CaseCoach. I plan to find more people there to prepare for my case interviews.

Do you have any other recommendations that worked for you in acing the assessment tests? Any other resource recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations to help you ace your consulting internship preparation:

  1. Case Interview Preparation:

    • Utilize business school casebooks (e.g., Harvard, Wharton, etc.) for practice. These are often available online and provide a wide range of cases to work through.
    • Leverage Case Interview Secrets by Victor Cheng and Case in Point for structured guidance.
    • Practice with CaseCoach, which you already have access to, as it’s a solid resource for case prep.
    • Engage in mock interviews with peers or mentors to simulate real interview conditions.
  2. Assessment Test Preparation:

    • Focus on mental math and logical reasoning. Resources like "Mental Math Practice for Consulting" can be helpful.
    • Familiarize yourself with input-output analysis and other frameworks that might appear in consulting tests.
    • Use platforms like RocketBlocks to sharpen your problem-solving and business acumen.
  3. Networking and Soft Skills:

    • Attend firm events like group circles, office hours, and case competitions. These interactions are often assessed and can leave a positive impression.
    • Build relationships with alumni or current consultants from your target firms to gain insights and advice.
  4. Additional Resources:

    • Consider books like The LOMS Program by Victor Cheng and 20 Days to Ace the Case by Destin Whitehurst for more in-depth preparation.
    • Watch relevant TED Talks (e.g., by Amy Cuddy or Simon Sinek) to improve your communication and presentation skills.
    • Explore tools like Pyramid Principle by Minto and Say it with Charts by Zelazny to enhance your structured thinking and visual communication.
  5. Practice Strategy:

    • Focus on perfect practice rather than just volume. Understand how interviewers grade your performance and aim for "great" scores in each dimension.
    • Use a mix of self-practice and peer practice to refine your approach.

By combining these resources and strategies, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle both the assessment tests and case interviews. Good luck!
