What next?

Hello there,

First post here. I'm in a bit of a pickle right now. I joined Accenture 5 months ago as a mgmt consultant and honestly, it’s been a nightmare. The industry I joined and the nature of the work (traveling etc.) was just overwhelming to the point I got physically sick. Now I resigned but I am not sure what to do now. Consulting was this one thing I always thought I wanted but now that I got to experience it, I am not even sure what to do especially regarding the current market situation. Would appreciate some help.

Cheers

It sounds like you're going through a tough time, but don't worry—there are actionable steps you can take to get back on track. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider:

  1. Take a Step Back and Reflect
Consulting can be intense, and it's not uncommon for people to realize it's not the right fit. Use this time to reflect on what aspects of the job were overwhelming. Was it the travel, the industry, the work culture, or something else? Understanding this will help you avoid similar pitfalls in your next role.

  2. Leverage Your Network
Reach out to former classmates, colleagues, or mentors. Networking is key, especially in a challenging market. As one WSO thread suggests, even reaching out to career services at your school can open doors. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice or leads on roles that align better with your strengths and preferences.

  3. Consider a Lateral Move
If consulting still interests you but the environment at Accenture wasn’t a fit, you could explore lateral moves to firms with a different focus or culture. For example, boutique firms or specialized platforms like Capco or Big 4 shops might offer a better balance.

  4. Explore Exit Opportunities
Consulting provides a strong foundation for various career paths. Common exits include corporate strategy, private equity portfolio operations, venture capital, or even entrepreneurship. If you’re unsure, roles like strategy analyst positions in industry (as highlighted in WSO threads) could be a good starting point.

  5. Set a Timeline and Goals
Give yourself a clear timeline to explore your options. If you’re still uncertain after a set period, consider pursuing an MBA or other advanced education to reset your career trajectory. Business school can also help you pivot into roles like PE, VC, or corporate strategy.

  6. Focus on Your Well-being
Burnout and physical illness are serious. Prioritize your health and well-being before diving into the next opportunity. A clear mind will help you make better decisions.

Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Take this as a learning experience and use it to find a path that aligns with your goals and values. Good luck!
