What to request for my internship?
Incoming intern at a large MBB office with a very diverse mix of casework (no individual industry makes up >20% of work). I have absolutely no idea what I might want to work on. I know that preferences don't matter too much but I'd like to have some idea of what different industries are like; is there really a big difference in how the work "feels" between each? I'm just not sure where to even start when thinking about this.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this situation:
Explore Broadly: Since your MBB office has a diverse mix of casework, this is a great opportunity to explore different industries. While preferences may not heavily influence your staffing, expressing a willingness to try various industries can help you gain exposure and figure out what resonates with you.
Understand Industry Differences: Yes, the "feel" of the work can differ significantly between industries. For example:
Leverage the Staffing Model:
Ask for Guidance: Speak with your staffing manager or mentors at the firm. They can provide insights into the types of cases available and help you align your interests with the firm's needs.
Be Open-Minded: Since you’re unsure of your preferences, focus on gaining a variety of experiences. This will help you identify what you enjoy and where your strengths lie.
Network and Learn: Use your internship to connect with colleagues who have worked in different industries. Ask them about their experiences and what they found rewarding or challenging.
By keeping an open mind and actively seeking diverse experiences, you’ll maximize the value of your internship and gain clarity on your future career interests.
