When are MBBs beginning full time recruitment? How much time should I spend networking?

Question

I'm a target school rising senior with an internship in a top division at GS/JPM/MS. I'm considering applying for consulting full time as I am not certain what I want between consulting/banking and I do not have a guaranteed full time offer from GS/JPM/MS. I know when McKinsey is beginning recruitment, but I don't have information on Bain or BCG. Does anyone have this information? I had spreadsheets for every bulge bank for networking for banking recruiting, should I take a similar approach to networking for MBB Consulting?

You don’t have to network nearly as much as you did for IB recruiting. Around 2 contacts at each firm and a 15 minute phone call with each is more than enough, but based your background you might not need any at all. Your point about the automatic offers and the potentially higher importance for networking could turn out to be true, but even if that’s the case it‘ll only get you the interview. Spending time preparing for the case and fit (especially for McKinsey) will be more valuable than collecting contacts at each firm. I wouldn’t worry about declining the McKinsey interview invite.

Wait, please, please go to all the events you can, in addition to your 15 min phone calls. It matters so much that you show interest and effort. A couple of anecdotal data points: in the fall I basically only went to campus events for one MBB, and was much lazier with the others. I only got a first round interview with that firm, even though I had talked to people outside events from the others. I'm starting full time in a year with the firm I got a first round at. This is a similar experience that many of my friends had.
