Based on the most helpful WSO content, nepotism exists across various industries, including consulting, but it is not exclusive to any one firm or tier. While there isn't specific data ranking McKinsey, BCG, Bain, or other firms by the prevalence of "nepo babies," anecdotal evidence suggests that nepotism can play a role in hiring, especially in high-profile firms or offices with strong local networks.

For example, in the WSO thread discussing nepotism, users highlighted cases like Zachary Dell joining Blackstone PE and Chelsea Clinton's high-profile roles, emphasizing that nepotism is more visible in certain industries or roles. However, in consulting, the rigorous interview process at MBB firms (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) generally ensures that candidates meet high standards, even if connections help them get a foot in the door.

Regarding office or location dependency, nepotism might be more noticeable in smaller or regional offices where personal networks are tighter, or in locations with a strong concentration of elite schools and influential families. However, this varies widely and is not a universal rule.

If you're concerned about nepotism affecting your chances, focus on acing the interview process, as MBB firms prioritize merit and performance in their hiring decisions.

can confirm the mck thing kinda? One friend whose parent was a mck partner wasnt allowed to but ik of mck partner kids who are working there so not sure where the line was toed.

Bain in my experience by far, see it too much at my school

I'm initially from Europe and Bain for me has been notorious for hiring the picture-berfect Business/Frat type of Guy/Girl. Has even been a joke between me and my friends ... its just a super certain type especially for women (just take a look on Linkedin on some European offices) its always this blonde/brunette Barbie kind of girll with a instagram looking selfie as Linkedin profile picture.

McK I perceive as much different. Much more nerdy ppl and less frats. Also not a lot of nepos.

UK here and I get that ‘frat’ impression about BCG - they all have to be good looking, weirdly pose-y LinkedIn’s, they’re all full of themselves, etc.

Echo the rest - McK seems pretty meritocratic (beyond the standard target school favouritism) and Bain less so
