Corp Dev. Associate Comp

All,

Thinking of accepting a corp dev role at a PE backed consumer/retail focused company in the Bay Area. Company is about ~7BN+ in sales and very acquisitive. Comp expectation wise they asked what I wanted, I am thinking 150 base and 30 percent bonus (no stock options given).

Can someone confirm if this is above or at market? Have direct and very transferable experience.

Thanks

Associate at PE backed healthcare in NYC. When I was going through the interview process the recruiter told me $125-$155k base + 20-30% bonus depending on experience. If you have a solid IB background you might have some leeway. I would say aim slightly higher on the salary to start negotiations.

How big is the team that you will be joining?

Any insights as to the comp differential at a PE portco versus public company? Setting aside the upside potential from equity comp, I’ve heard conflicting information about which offers greater cash comp.

If you buy into the notion that an organization's finance structure's comp is determined by how much that organization values finance (I do), it will probably be the PE PortCo that pays better most of the time. The issue with publicly traded corporations is that they do not value finance as much as PE PortCo tend to and their stricter comp bands. A PE PortCo tends to be more nimble and less bureaucratic.

This - your comp will also be hurt at a large public company because "Finance" is generally defined as FP&A / Controllers / Accountants / etc. Those BO functions tend to pull the comp range down, especially if Corp Dev rolls up into Finance.

Generally at a public corp you should look for roles that flow up into the CEO for both Strategy and Corp / Biz Dev. These tends to be better paid on average, with more visibility and appetite for growth and investment vs. roles up into CFOs.
