Credit Analysis to Financial Analysis (CMA in Canada)

Hi All,

This is long, but any sort of feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Overview:

What are the chances of going from a CFA/Credit Analyst type role to a Corp. Finance type role? I'm located in Canada so no CPA here. But is it worth considering enrolling in the CMA program?

My profile:

I'm sitting for CFA L3 this June. My experience consists of entering in financial spreads, making adjustments to get at the underlying earnings trend, analyzing the business/financial profile, help make credit rating recommendations subject to Sr. Analyst oversight.

Details:

So I got into a credit analyst support role at a rating agency quite late (around 27). After several years, I've decided this is not the route I want to keep going, which is being 'that' lead analyst, dealing with client mangement/service and company brand management. If a buy side credit research role landed on my lap, sure, I would take that, but that's likely not going to happen. Getting into a bank hasn't been that easy too.

Basically, my personality and interests lie with being more middle-office type, which is put in my hours for the day, not aim sky-high for salary, and enjoy my time physically and mentally with my family (just had a kid last year and love spending time with her) and parents who are getting up there in age.

That CFA analyst route I find among my peers generally tend to be more competitive, more $$ driven, generally more cynical, less family focused and willing to put many hours. I went through a wave of that and do not want to choose that route.

Looking around, I see many Financial Analyst jobs in corporations. Many in Canada generally require "CA/CMA/CGA". In some cases, working towards one.

Experience wise, I'm limited at even the the most basic but detailed mechanical aspects of accounting for a company's accounting. My experience is from a financial statement user perspective.

If I pursue a CMA (have BBA degree), and based on my experience in a different type of financial analysis, what are the chances of landing in a Financial Analyst role?

Is it already too late or too competitive against people that have started out in more basic FA roles moving their way up? Or do you think its possible given demonstrated experience in applying analytical judgement + enrolment in the CMA program?
