FA Salary Range at Small/Med firm in Denver
I just made it to a final round interview with a medical services company for a FA position in Denver. The only thing is that they want a hard number for salary expectations and I am having a tough time finding solid numbers on a typical salary (ranges from 30k-90k). I know there are a lot of variables involved but I would appreciate any help with finding a decent salary range to tell them. Here is some info that may make it a little easier:
-Small-Med size medical services firm
-Very little work experience (two 3-month internships during summer, one in a finance position).
-Have a degree in accounting and 3.9 GPA (not sure if that matters)
-Some core responsibilities of the position: Develop pro forma financials, compile/analyze/evaluate operational metrics, support budget and forecasting processes, ad hoc analysis, etc.
-Their company reviews on glassdoor says they offer pretty decent compensation.
Again, I am just looking for a range that won't get me kicked out the door or underpaid. Thank you for the help.
This sounds like an operations/accounting role. Assuming you are just out of undergrad, this kind of a role is likely in the $40-$50 range, and probably closer to $40. To put it in perspective, Big 4 pays just a bit lower than industry accounting/ops (read: F500) right out of school but offers about $45 in Denver (educated guess). For a small/medium company it will likely be slightly lower.
I will say, this might not be the best place to petition this kind of information simply because most of the people here likely won't know.
But from the limited information I have, I wouldn't set your expectations higher than $50. Also, Glassdoor isn't perfect but if you're seeing $30, you might want to brace yourself for sub $40.
rhen: Your "educated guesses" regarding the Big 4 are incorrect. thelaminater: I would ask for 50k and expect 45k.
Interesting. For what it's worth, I do happen to know the 2013 Big 4 salaries (Audit) in various west cities (think: Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, Bay area) and the range is $44 - $51. I am first year audit, but granted I don't know Denver. Not surprised if it's higher than my guess.
thelaminater: Not trying to be pessimistic, but if you can get $45 with an ops job, take it.
Side note: CPAturnedIB, mind if I PM you about your experience transitioning to IB? Interested in consulting personally, but if you went MBA I'd love to hear any advice.
I'd say $40-$45k, based on what I've seen in Denver (only seen O&G though - no med)
Thanks for the help. That narrows it down to a manageable number.
Check glassdoor.
Man if those salaries in the west are accurate those are some low ranges. Big 4 firms in Chicago are paying mid to upper 50s (w/ TS paying almost 60K) while FA at F500s paying 45-60K with probably an average in the low 50s.
This. The salaries I mentioned specifically are 100% accurate.
Glassdoor sucks also, don't trust it. Extremely limited amount of data points.
For a small firm I'd guess somewhere in the 40s though.
There is a big difference between F500 and Big 4 Audit and a small medical services firm based in Denver.
FWIW, 2 friends went to Lockheed in Colorado: one had interned there previously and got $52k base, the other had not and got $47-49k (do not remember exactly).
When it comes down to jobs outside of IB, HF, etc., I would recommend using the "avg major salary" as a starting point. In your case, I would probably throw out $45k - $50k.

I don't understand how anyone can live in a big city making less than 50.
