Move from IT Business analyst at IB to Credit Analyst at Commercial Bank?

Hi All,

Been a reader of the site for a while now, however this is my first forum post! I am currently working as an IT business analyst at a U.K. IB and have just rolled off of the graduate programme after 2 years. The pay is good (Very good in fact) however I have little to no interest in the work and I am not really a technology guy (I was naïve in thinking I had to apply to the technology programme because my degree was technology focused). I do however have a very strong interest in finance and the financial markets. I have always envied the graduates in the investment banking/corporate banking side and I am constantly reading around the topic.

Recently I was put in touch with a director at the commercial banking arm of the bank, dealing with commercial clients with revenues between £2mil and £10mil and mid-corporates with revenues over £25mil. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have been offered a role in the team, as an assistant director helping manage a portfolio of clients and providing credit stewardship, capital management and portfolio reporting. I was just wondering if this was a good move to make if I Wanted to break into banking? My concern is leaving the traditional Investment banking side (albeit in a technology/support function) and moving into the commercial side (However in a front office role). Are the career prospects good in this field (Can I move into the more lucrative sides of banking from here?). Do I have a shot at making far in banking starting in a role like this? Or should I stick with technology side of Investment banking?

Thanks for your help in advance!
