Pfizer to Acquire Hospira....thoughts?
Not sure if everyone saw the news yesterday morning...but Pfizer announced it is going to acquire Hospira. Thoughts? The reason I ask is that I have an opportunity to go work for Hospira, but I'm not sure it's a good idea now given this news. My guess is the corporate staff of Hospira in Lake Forest is going to get slashed.

Not totally sure what the vision is, but it seems to me like Pfizer is trying to build a few more product areas through M&A before the company splits.
That's what the speculation of a lot of the articles is. I'm curious to know if they plan to operate Hospira largely in it's current state. (HQ in Lake Forest, same staff, etc)
Healthcare M&A at these valuations only makes sense if you fire half the workforce. It could be risky. I'd ask your future/potential manager for insight.
I have a family member who is a division leader at a global pharmaco. I can confirm that when managerial employees are together, all they talk about is M&A and firings.
It probably wont surprise him/her that you are worried. Although he is probably praying to get fired to collect that sweet severance package.
That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've known people who have been victims of acquisition related headcount reductions, and it isn't pretty. It seems like a pretty risky move to me and I'm going to be talking to the hiring manager (Finance Director) next week to see what his insight is.
Finance division, depending on your role, could be safe.
Consensus is that corp staff is the first to go...but someone needs to handle accounting/planning for the hospira subsidiaries.
