Sr. Financial Analyst (Really a Revenue Analyst) at Media/Entertainment Company - Career Options, Where to Go From Here?

Background: I’m currently living and working in NYC making $80k with up to 12% potential bonus as a Sr. Financial Analyst in Ad Sales Finance at a major TV media company (i.e. Fox, NBC Universal, Discovery Communications, Viacom) coming up on 6 years of various work experience.

My career breakdown is as follows:

1 yr: Temporary Role - Financial Analyst at relatively small consumer goods firm – mostly doing AR/AP work on AS400 with minimal excel work. Temp job. $12/hr.

1.25 yrs: Financial Analyst at small direct response radio marketing firm (~20 people) – Helped run advertising campaigns from the ground up, including excel modeling and client management. Models were incredibly basic and focused almost entirely on revenue analysis. Company was paid per telephone call generated by radio ads (embedded with a toll free number) we placed. Our job was to spend less placing the ads than we generated in phone calls. Didn’t learn much here beyond basic excel usage.

3.5 yrs (current position) – Financial Analyst and then Sr. Financial Analyst in Ad Sales Finance at current media company in NYC - Job is centered entirely around revenue analysis (no expense work, accounting or general ledger work outside of very small bits and pieces). Includes quarterly forecasting, yearly budgeting, monthly close and lots of ad hoc excel work. My main job is to work with the Ad Sales team to maximize revenue generation on our commercial TV inventory. No involvement on the digital side of the house. Pay was $62k until this past November when I asked for and received a raise to $75k. Was bumped to $80k in yearly review in March.

Long story short, I’m sick of the job. The work is incredibly boring, uninteresting excel work Not only that but I feel that I’m severely underpaid given the location (NYC) and my experience. I’m also still performing many of the same tasks I was 3.5 years ago when I started as a financial analyst. As a result my motivation has tanked. Growth opportunities are few and far between here.

I looked into leaving last year and worked with a few recruiters who only offered me similar roles in other media companies, which I’m not keen on pursuing.

However, having what I would consider no true FP&A experience (including working in systems like SAP), I feel that I’m being pigeon-holed into revenue analysis at media companies (something I figured would happen when I took this job so I’m not surprised that it did).

I’ve been self-studying computer science in an attempt to make my work easier and possibly entertain a different career path but anything coming from that path is far off. I've also taken the GMAT and scored 710 (scores are still usable) when I was still aiming for an eventual IB/PE career or a potential career change into something else but I’m now 30 so I see that door as closing, also.

I’m open to teaching myself any needed financial concepts and have access to a few excel modeling courses on Breaking Into Wall St from when I failed to break into IB out of college.

Are there any options open to me beyond revenue analysis at media companies? Is an MBA the most viable option for a career move at this point? Is it possible to learn the FP&A concepts needed to step into a different role that won’t involve me going back to square one? Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you either need to move over to a similar, but not same industry (highlighting different projects you've been on that span beyond your current role or simply go back and get the MBA (full time or part time). Full time will take less time but will likely cost more and give you more options. Part time you might be able to get someone to pay for it.
