Thoughts on transferring to better my career
Good Morning, I am a sophomore student at the University of Massachusetts Boston studying Finance as well as a pitcher on the baseball.
My love for baseball is strong, but I am starting to wonder if transferring to better my career in finance is a more appropriate task I should engage in. For reference, I am looking to transfer to Baruch College in NYC, it’s an easy commute and I will be attending for a cheap price.
I want to break into Corporate Finance or Asset Management, something along those lines. I have a 3.72 GPA and have taken a variety of relevant classes in relation to my major here at UMass.
I am not sure if this is a good path to take, the connections at UMass are not terrible, and they have various clubs and other organizations I can join in my free time. I also like the status of a student-athlete being on my resume. I have done tons of research on Baruch and from the list of pros and cons I’ve made Baruch looks like a great option to connect further in NYC and get my career pushing forward in the right track.
Do I retire from the sport I grew up with or do I prioritize my future and hope the ROI on this will be strong and fruitful?
I appreciate any insight. Thanks guys
i think you should transfer man future looks bright for you
Not worth transferring
You're already a sophomore, so you'd be behind on recruiting as a junior transfer and may need to delay grad (prob not necessary for corpfin, but school also matters much less)
Baruch is a better non-target, but still a non-target and won't greatly increase your chances of landing something
You are correct that student-athlete is good to have on your resume with a solid GPA (anecdotal but a huge percentage of placements at my semi-target were athletes)
Boston is a great place for AM and corpfin is everywhere so not sure why you need to be in NY
You should buckle down and join all the orgs, try and get a leadership position and start pushing connections at UMass
Decide specifically what you want to pursue (Corpfin and AM are vastly different), network with alumni in your chosen field (athlete alumni prob warmest connections), and prep for when apps open
Good luck
Thanks man, but would I really be that far behind for recruiting? I am utilizing all resources I have to connect w/ alum and apply to local internships. Junior year is not that late, but not that early. I appreciate any insight you have.
