What is the best path to get to a corporate finance job?
I have recently become interested in corporate finance and am trying to learn more about it. I was originally interested in IB so I am aware of the general path that most people take to get to that level. However, I am not so aware of the path to work in corporate finance. Can anyone shed some light on the best path to take, as an undergrad, to land a job when I graduate? Any known internship programs specifically tailored to corp fin will also be much appreciated. Thanks
I made a thread https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/how-i-landed-a-fdp-offer-from-an…</a">here that detailed my path of getting into a F100ish FLDP, and recently made a comment https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/how-did-you-all-land-your-fldps-…</a">here that gives a bit more detail.
Long story short- a lot of companies will post summer internship openings throughout the school year. Regularly check postings by companies you are interested in, try to reach out to the college recruiter in the HR department of these companies.
During your senior year, most FLDPs start recruiting in September, so keep an eye out for job reqs starting in August. It's not terribly difficult if you have a good GPA and a good internship under your belt.. reaching out to key people through LinkedIn can always help.
Feel free to ask any questions that aren't answered in the links above!
Thanks for the info man! I will definitely contact you if I need any additional information.
I'd say you follow dan_yo here. I'm also from the Big4 public accounting background and would personally have done a different route if I had the chance. Not saying that it is bad, it does give you learnings, but I would have found ways to do better.
FLDP for sure is great, but its also important you know which company's FLDP you are going into and why. Also in mind is what role or which, rather you are aiming for in Corporate Finance.
As long as you get an internship for the summer after your junior year at a reputable (F500) company and you excel during that you will have many opportunities after graduation. To put yourself in the best position for that, it would probably be beneficial to land an internship sophomore year too. Just like any job in finance, networking and hard work are key.
as mentioned above, make sure you start the recruiting process in August/September
Personally went through Public accounting then to corporate finance. I don't recommend this as a very easy transition. Although my university convinced me that public accounting opens a ton of doors for you. After a few years of acct all of the recruiters want to put you in that accounting bucket (easier for them to sell) and it is more difficult to brand yourself as otherwise. Definitely do-able but I would take a different route if I had a do over.
