Asset backed finance help

Hey, I have an interview next week for a well-known ABF group. I have a good understanding of the product; however, I don't know what technical questions to prepare for. It would be awesome if any of you all are familiar with this space.

Thank you all

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know to prepare for an Asset-Backed Finance (ABF) interview:

Key Technical Areas to Focus On:

  1. Understanding Securitization:

    • Be ready to explain the securitization process, including how assets are pooled and sold to a special purpose vehicle (SPV).
    • Know the role of tranches (senior, mezzanine, equity) and how risk is distributed among them.
  2. Asset Classes:

    • Familiarize yourself with the types of assets typically securitized, such as auto loans, credit card receivables, mortgages, and student loans.
    • Be prepared to discuss the characteristics of these assets and their cash flow profiles.
  3. Credit Analysis:

    • Understand how to assess the credit quality of the underlying assets.
    • Be ready to discuss metrics like default rates, recovery rates, and loss given default (LGD).
  4. Bond Math:

    • Brush up on basic bond math, including yield calculations, duration, and convexity.
    • Be prepared to discuss how changes in interest rates affect the pricing of asset-backed securities (ABS).
  5. Waterfall Structures:

    • Know how cash flows are distributed in a securitization structure.
    • Be ready to answer questions about priority of payments, overcollateralization, and reserve accounts.
  6. Regulatory Environment:

    • Have a basic understanding of regulations affecting the ABF space, such as Basel III, Dodd-Frank, or risk retention rules.
  7. Market Trends:

    • Be prepared to discuss current trends in the ABF market, such as the impact of interest rate changes or economic conditions on securitization volumes.

Common Technical Questions:

  • Walk me through the securitization process.
  • How would you evaluate the creditworthiness of a pool of assets?
  • What happens to the yield of an ABS if interest rates rise?
  • Explain the difference between senior and subordinated tranches in a securitization.
  • How would you structure a deal to minimize risk for senior tranche investors?

Resources to Prepare:

  • WSO Guides: The WSO Prep Pack and technical guides are excellent for brushing up on bond math and credit analysis.
  • Books: Consider reading "The Handbook of Fixed Income Securities" by Fabozzi for a deeper dive into ABS.
  • Practice Questions: Use the 400 M&I question guide for general technical prep, as many concepts overlap.

Good luck with your interview! Remember, confidence and a clear understanding of the fundamentals will go a long way. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask!
