Bank of America Enterprise Credit Culture?

Have some upcoming interviews with them and can't find too much info as a whole so starting this thread. I'm looking at the underwriting side. I've seen people in this office on LinkedIn use CIB titles but wondering if that's accurate since BOA uses underwriter I/II/Credit officer.

Currently at another BB on their corporate underwriting team so I will imagine it's the same job but if anyone could provide context on what it's like at BOA would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about Bank of America’s Enterprise Credit culture, particularly on the underwriting side:

  1. Titles and Structure:

    • BofA uses titles like Underwriter I/II and Credit Officer, which differ from the more traditional CIB titles (Analyst, Associate, VP, etc.). While some individuals may use CIB titles on LinkedIn, the internal structure is more aligned with these underwriting-specific roles.
    • The roles are fundamentally similar to corporate underwriting at other BBs, but the structure and responsibilities may vary slightly.
  2. Responsibilities:

    • The underwriting/portfolio management group is responsible for evaluating transactions, underwriting the bank's credit commitments, and drafting credit approval memos. These memos analyze financials, capital structure, risks, projections, and repayment sources.
    • You’ll also process loans, monitor portfolios, and update internal risk rating scorecards based on financial statement releases.
  3. Culture and Work Environment:

    • The culture can vary significantly by team. Some teams are more family-oriented, with many employees staying long-term and prioritizing work-life balance.
    • However, certain teams may have stricter mandates, such as requiring in-office attendance even when the rest of the floor is remote. This can create a less flexible environment depending on the MD or leadership style.
  4. Exit Opportunities:

    • Exit opportunities are somewhat limited unless you’re in a highly financial-analysis-focused team with heavy deal flow (e.g., GCIB Credit TMT). Common exits include moving to another bank or staying in credit as a career banker.
    • Transitions to roles like Equity Research (ER) or Sales & Trading (S&T) are rare and require significant outside effort.
  5. Work-Life Balance:

    • Wholesale Credit at BofA is often recommended for those who value work-life balance while still wanting exposure to the financial industry. However, the balance may depend on the specific team and workload.

If you’re coming from another BB’s corporate underwriting team, you’ll likely find the job responsibilities familiar, but it’s worth probing during interviews about the specific team culture and expectations.
