IB > Credit Analyst > ???

For quick background, I currently have 2+ years of investment banking experience (no-name LMM bank), stepping into a credit analyst role at a somewhat large bank. Want to hear some realistic exit opportunities following 1-2 years in commercial credit w/ IB experience in my back pocket. Open to many different things following my time in credit, but want to hear where others have made the jump to. Thanks in advance.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some realistic exit opportunities for someone with your background (2+ years in IB and 1-2 years in a credit analyst role):

  1. Lateral Move to Investment Banking (Coverage/Product Groups)

    • Over half of credit analysts with prior IB experience successfully transition back into IB roles, typically in coverage or product groups like leveraged finance. Your IB background and relationships with bankers during your credit stint will be key to making this move.
  2. Senior Financial Analyst Roles

    • Many credit analysts move into senior financial analyst positions at companies they covered while in credit. Your IB and credit experience make you a valuable asset to these companies, especially if you've built strong relationships with their CFOs or Treasurers.
  3. Private Equity (Lower Middle Market)

    • While less common, top-performing credit analysts with IB experience can transition into lower MM PE shops. PE firms often prefer candidates with broader skill sets, so your combined IB and credit background could be advantageous.
  4. Credit/Distressed Debt Funds

    • Some analysts move into credit-focused or distressed debt hedge funds. However, competition is fierce, and these roles often require strong networking and a demonstrated understanding of credit markets.
  5. Equity Research

    • Equity research has become a more common exit for credit analysts, especially for those with a strong analytical background and interest in public markets.
  6. Corporate Development/Strategy

    • If you're looking for a better work-life balance, corporate development roles are a great option. These roles involve executing M&A transactions and capital-raising activities, leveraging your IB and credit experience.
  7. Direct Lending

    • Direct lenders are another viable exit, especially if you've worked on deals involving leveraged finance or syndicated loans during your credit analyst role.
  8. MBA and Career Pivot

    • If you're still exploring options after 1-2 years in credit, pursuing an MBA can open doors to a broader range of opportunities, including consulting, corporate strategy, or higher-tier PE/IB roles.

Your IB experience gives you a strong foundation, and your time in credit will further enhance your understanding of financial analysis and risk assessment. Networking and leveraging relationships will be critical to securing your desired exit.
