Infra Private Credit

Currently looking at a few Infrastructure (Data Centers, Fiber etc.) private credit opportunities and curious how they might compare to other PC funds. Anyone have any insight along with the typical hours? Also curious if its possible to pivot to more vanilla direct lending after or would I be pigeonholed?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, infrastructure private credit opportunities, such as those involving data centers and fiber, can offer a unique niche within the private credit space. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Comparison to Other Private Credit Funds:

    • Infrastructure private credit often involves underwriting assets with stable, long-term cash flows, which can make it less volatile compared to other private credit strategies.
    • The focus on infrastructure assets like data centers and fiber typically aligns with lower-risk profiles, as these assets are often essential and have predictable revenue streams.
    • While the pay in private credit is generally slightly less than private equity, the lifestyle is often better, with more predictable hours and less volatility in carry.
  2. Typical Hours:

    • Hours in private credit, including infrastructure-focused roles, are generally better than traditional private equity. A typical day might range from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM, with occasional weekend work, depending on deal flow and deadlines.
  3. Pivoting to Vanilla Direct Lending:

    • Transitioning from infrastructure private credit to more traditional direct lending is possible, but it depends on how transferable your skills are perceived. Infrastructure private credit involves a specific focus on asset-backed lending and long-term cash flow analysis, which might differ from the underwriting and structuring in vanilla direct lending.
    • However, the analytical and deal execution skills you develop in infrastructure private credit can still be valuable in broader private credit roles. Networking and positioning your experience effectively will be key to making the pivot.

If you're considering this path, infrastructure private credit can be a great career move, offering a balance of interesting work, good pay, and a manageable lifestyle.
