Private Credit Models

Hi. I’m joining a private credit firm in ~3 weeks that mostly do direct lending.I come from a product group without much (or any) experience in lending to traditional companies. Can anyone care to share any case studies or models for private credit? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and tips for private credit modeling and case studies:

  1. Credit Modeling Basics:

    • A typical private credit model involves forecasting cash flows, determining debt service coverage, and analyzing the return profile of structured investments.
    • For early-stage credit investments, terms often include PIK (Payment in Kind), a 5-year term, and spreads ranging from 11-15% over SOFR. Warrants may also be attached to the credit investment.
  2. Case Study Preparation:

    • Case studies often require building a model and writing a memo or presentation. You may need to explain your assumptions, forecasting rationale, and model structure.
    • Focus on debt comps to determine coupon rates and covenants, as these are critical in private credit-specific cases.
  3. Key Frameworks:

    • Familiarize yourself with LBO modeling, as it shares similarities with private credit modeling.
    • Understand the risk-return characteristics of different debt instruments (e.g., 2nd lien, HY bonds) and how they fit into the capital structure.
  4. Resources:

    • While there are limited private credit-specific recruiting courses, prepping for private credit interviews is similar to private equity. You can leverage PE interview prep materials for foundational knowledge.
    • If you're looking for templates or examples, consider reaching out to professionals in the space or exploring WSO's financial modeling resources.

If you need more specific examples or templates, you might want to connect with others in the industry or explore WSO's modeling resources and bootcamps.
