Should I be looking

Hi All,

Coming up on 2-years experience at my current bank. It has been great and I've been performing well, through 360 reviews and MD feedback. I am likely not getting a promotion this year, and I deserve one, while i love the bank and the culture...which I add to, I am also set to plateau on my learning. It is a sales/syndication role and everyone is above me and seems to work on the deals where i am rarely on calls(except for later in the deal cycle), and basically just a closer. Everyone is partitioning their work and not providing a chance to sit in the number 2 seat on the deal. I have 3.5 years with another bank and debt fund. and 11 YEO total, mostly in CRE. previous position was AVP and took this role for more money, it was more a lateral.

Now jobs positions have opened up at the VP level and would like to know if i should be looking, especially since I know people at these firms.  My only hodlback is my work experience is 2 years-3yr-1yr-2yr-fired during covid-1.5yr-now 2 yr.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're at a crossroads where your career progression and learning opportunities are plateauing. While you value the culture and your current role, the lack of exposure to higher-level responsibilities and the inability to step into a more prominent role on deals could hinder your long-term growth.

Your concern about job-hopping is valid, but in finance, especially in roles like yours, it's not uncommon to see professionals move every 2-3 years to advance their careers. The key is to ensure that each move is strategic and adds value to your resume. If VP-level roles are opening up and you have connections at those firms, it might be worth exploring those opportunities, especially if they offer more responsibility, deal exposure, and a clear path for growth.

Your 11 years of experience, including CRE and syndication, should position you well for a VP role. Just be prepared to address your job transitions during interviews by framing them as strategic moves for growth and opportunity. If you feel confident about your network and the potential roles, it might be the right time to make a move.
