STRS OH Private Credit Analyst

I am new so please forgive if I am not publishing properly.

I am interviewing Wednesday with Ohio's State Teacher Retirement System (STRS) as a private credit analyst.

My only somewhat relevant experience is I did a couple internships and a year in IB.

Any advice on how to prepare and thoughts on the role / space ?

Thanks!

For your interview with Ohio's State Teacher Retirement System (STRS) as a Private Credit Analyst, here’s what you need to focus on based on the most helpful WSO content:

Preparation Tips:

  1. Understand Private Credit Fundamentals:

    • Be ready to discuss the capital structure and where private credit fits (e.g., senior debt, mezzanine, unitranche).
    • Highlight the downside protection focus in private credit compared to equity investing. Credit is about stable returns, not chasing upside.
  2. Deal Experience:

    • Be prepared to walk through your deal experience from your IB internships and year in banking. Focus on:
      • How the deals were financed (debt levels, covenants, pricing, leverage).
      • Why lenders or debt investors were comfortable with the deal.
      • Risks and mitigants in the deals you worked on.
  3. Credit-Specific Metrics:

    • Brush up on credit stats like leverage ratios, fixed-charge coverage, and debt service coverage.
    • Understand debt comps to determine coupon rates and covenants.
  4. Case Study/Modeling:

    • If there’s a case study, expect it to be similar to an LBO model but with a focus on credit metrics rather than IRR/MOIC.
    • Practice building a model and writing an investment memo. Be ready to defend your assumptions and explain your thought process.
  5. Market Knowledge:

    • Familiarize yourself with the current state of the debt market. Check resources like LevFin weekly reports or indices like the BAML ICE index to understand trends in pricing, spreads, and leverage.
  6. Why Private Credit?

    • Be clear on why you’re interested in private credit over equity or other roles. Avoid framing it as an "easier" path and instead focus on your genuine interest in credit investing and downside protection.

Thoughts on the Role/Space:

  • Private Credit Growth: The private credit space has grown significantly over the past decade, offering opportunities to work on diverse deals and structures.
  • Exit Opportunities: While private credit roles can lead to other credit-related positions (distressed, mezzanine, leveraged finance), transitioning to equity-focused roles like PE may be more challenging.
  • Skill Development: This role will help you build expertise in credit analysis, structuring, and risk assessment, which are valuable in many areas of finance.

Good luck with your interview! Make sure to highlight your IB experience and how it has prepared you for analyzing and structuring credit investments.
