How did this guy do Equity Research and M&A without a degree?

From 1972 to 1988, he worked in accounting and then investor relations.
He worked in Equity Research from 1988 to 2016 with stints in M&A and ECM.
Because he started work in 1972
I mean, back in the day, whilst most people had a degree in IB, it wasn't a requirement, like you will (very very very rarely) see a few people who started off in stock brokering when that was still a thing and the jump over to S&T or IB.
He started off as an accountant, for which I assume he just sat the exam without a degree
Can you do that now? Become an Investment Banker after being an accountant with no university background?
No. Or rather quite unlikely at the caliber of firms he was working at.
Of course, it's still possible, though definitely not the typical route. There are actually a few firms that might take you on without a university background, such as J.T. Marlin. 😉
