Are steel straps too flashy for a 1st year analyst?

Looking to make a first watch purchase and have been eyeing the one below for a while. Currently getting a crazy good deal on it but want to make sure it’s not considered too flashy (steel strap as opposed to leather) to get as a first year. Let me know your thoughts.

steel is more casual than leather, so its the other way around. its a steel bracelet, no one calls it a steel strap. do not buy a $2.9K baume with a modified Swiss ETA 2824-2 movement at 28.8k bph. so many better models at that price.

id just start watching a lot of hodinkee and theo & harris before you spend serious dough on a watch. i can build a watch better than that 2.9K baume, using parts on eBay for about $300. at that price point, you want an in-house movement. Could get an omega with a co-axial movement at around $3k.

buy your watches from: www.chrono24.com

You want to buy entry level watches, but you also don't want watches that lose half their value 5 years from now. Baume is a okay but they're not super desirable and have little resale value. Their "in-house" movements are just modified ETA 2824-2 movements.

If i had $1500 to spend, I'd probably get a NOMOS Club or the Omega Seamaster from the 90s bond films

If I needed an entry level watch to hold me down before I became more knowledgeable on the topic, I'd get a Seiko SKX009 or SKX007

A slight step up from Baume is Frederique Constant. They make gorgeous watches that resemble Patek and you can get them off of Jomashop for good prices. Unfortunately, their resale value is only a tad bit above Baume.

Do your own research, it will make the purchase more satisfying. Then check retail prices and compare to http://www.chrono24.com/ to gauge how much $ you risk losing should you decide to sell.

My personal advice would be to get an SKX009, SKX007, Orient Bambino, or Seagull 1963 Chronograph to hold you down, and save your money till you can afford something significant. Personally, I don't buy hard assets that don't appreciate in value. Every Rolex I've owned, I've sold for more. Riskier purchasing that Baume than a $5-10K rollie

Ok 2 points here:

As said above by Jamie, "steel straps" are the most basic way of attaching a watch to your wrist. They are not seen as flashy. A crocodile leather strap (grey, blue, brown) would likely be flashier in my opinion.

Second, a Baume & Mercier is far from being excessive or too flashy for a first year analyst. It is an entry level luxury watch, no more no less.

Finally, if you want my opinion, I think that watch would look much better on a nice discrete leather strap. The metal band looks a bit old school on it.
