Do black dress shoes match with a dark blue suit?

Genuine question since I don’t have any fashion sense. I have a dark blue suit and a pair of really cheap (and ugly) brown dress shoes. Considering if it’s worth upgrading to a more quality pair of black dress shoes.

Yes - black dress shoes are the most versatile you will have. I recommend quality oxfords, loafers, and then a boot (say - chelsea dress boot or similar). That combination covers virtually anything, and if you go with a place like Beckett Simonon you can get it all for like $700 or so. Shop Allen Edmonds sales or similar and you can get close-ish to that price. DSW also has some decent options from time to time, so check there (often cole haan type shoes).

Especially if you travel, black solves a lot of headaches - you can mix blues, grays, jeans, etc. all with high quality black shoes. Easy to find a black belt that matches virtually anywhere even on short notice. I don't personally wear black shoes with khaki or brown nor would I recommend it. Most people don't care, so whatever.

For the most part - black is traditional for navy and gray suits/trousers/etc. Dark brown or similar type shades (a reddish oxblood cordovan looking color is increasingly popular now across shoe lines) can work with blue, but don't go too light. Just a general rule of thumb - will be broken, and not all shades/combos work.

Blue suits go with both brown and black shoes. IMO, black looks more professional for work-related events, but brown looks better for anything else.

Yes, black dress shoes can indeed match well with a dark blue suit. The combination creates a classic and sophisticated look that is both timeless and versatile. The contrast between the dark blue suit and the black shoes adds a touch of elegance and helps to highlight the overall outfit. Just ensure that the shoes are polished and well-maintained for a polished appearance.
