How Are Tom James Suits?

Anybody here used them for custom suits? Feedback good, bad, or neutral?

Quality of Tom James Suits

Tom James offers custom made bespoke suits tailored exactly to you. While this sounds nice, there are a lot of mixed reviews about Tom James.

The prices are quite high and unless your sales person is experienced, you would do just as fine purchasing something off the rack, tailored. The general consensus is that the shirts are reasonably priced but again, it’s nothing you cannot get at a regular tailor.

AcctNerd - Investment Advisor Vice President:
I had a bad experience. Bought two shirts to test them out. $130/per shirt and when I got the shirts the fabric was WAY too thin and the fit was horrible. Took 3 months to get them remade and they were still wrong. For $130 I was expecting much better.

There’s also a fair bit of negative feedback regarding the fit being correct and turn around time. The suits are not being made by a professional tailor but by salespeople.

Cabol - Investment Banking Associate:
Bad experience. Ordered a suit which turned out to be a bad fit. Had it remade a couple of times which took almost a year in total and still no luck. At the end asked my money back. I think the part of the problem is that the fitting is made not by professional tailor/cutter but by a salesman whose main job is to sell you the product (true story that they like to employ nice looking ladies). For the price, they ask there are better options out there (at least in London).

duffmt6 - Investment Banking Associate:
Have a few shirts. Quality is decent and fit is pretty good, but it's basically made to measure. Not competitive in pricing in that sense. Also, not a fan of the high-pressure sales, but am a fan of having them come to my office to tailor clothes.

Are Tom James Suits Worth It?

However, not all users had bad experiences. Some really enjoy their suits and the experiences.

Annoymous:
I have been wearing Tom James for a number of years and have consistently received only the best fabric and precise measurements. Yes, they cost more than others, but they also stand-out more than others. I receive compliments on a regular basis.

3200fps:
Had my fitting today and am very pleased and already ordered more. The initial consult and measure were a bit over 2 hours and the person I was working with has been a tailor for his entire career. After trying them on today I fully believe it. They definitely have a customer in me going forward.

One could argue that owning a Tom James suit is about status as much as anything.

Annoymous:
TomJames is more for those who have the clothing budget to afford clothing on a higher level and those looking for a nicer fabric then the typical department store provides. Their clothes have been featured in movies like Great Gatsby, Kingsman and similar films of you would like a reference. Been a client for several years and very pleased.

If you decide to invest money for a nicer make than tom ford offers, I suggest Tom James Oxxford make. Fabric is similar at their starting price point but fully custom is taking a step further in your wardrobe

I've been told they aren't that great and are overpriced. They call me all the time and its pretty annoying

Well, hope that is not the case. They were recommended to me by (2) different friends so I had an appointment and ordered 4 suits/shirts. The tailor seemed to be very well tuned so we shall see.

mixed reviews, mostly bad. 1 of my partners and another broker in the office use them, no complaints. I will say that my partner does it because his salesman has been around 30 years and really knows his shit, the other guy does it because his salesman is a smokeshow.

I've never bought from them, always found them overpriced for what they are. I think unless you want something ostentatious, you can get something like a hickey freeman or hart schaffner off the rack, get it tailored, and you will look fine.

for shirts, that price is reasonable, but I have a guy who does it out of his garage and it's better customer service, quicker turnaround, more accurate measurements, and a little lower cost (100-120 per shirt). ask around the office, you'll find plenty of tailors that do stuff like this.

Yeah, me and my colleagues tried Tom James and had a bad experience. Maybe the girl did not know how to take measurements. Recently a friend recommended another guy who delivered a perfect suit and was much cheaper with good fabric quality. The best part was that I paid him after I received my suit and was satisfied with it. I am not sure if he offers this to everyone or offered this to me because my friend has been his customer for a while.

I am not a fan. For the price, you can get a 'real' tailor to make shirts from scratch. If you want brand name, Polo Ralph Lauren is good value, RRL is a little extra fashion, and if you want to ball out, purple label is made in Italy with FANTASTIC materials/workmanship

I got all my money back.

Terrible experience. Shirts were measured incorrectly. You'll wait weeks, and then, weeks more. Don't be lured by the attractive sales reps. Save your money.

It really depends on the salesperson you get. If they know what they do, great. If not, you are f***d.

My experience has been of the salesman, bad measurements, thin fabric, unimpressed sort. Was introduced to an old, old tailor in my hometown that "lifetime guarantees" his suits for wear and tear or change in sizes. Too bad he will be dead in the next 3 years and I will be out 10k.

I would be open to that arrangement if that was an option here. Anyway, I just took delivery of a sport coat I had TJ make and it fits perfect and a very nice fabric.

I would say C+, maybe B-.

That doesn't sound great. Was thinking about buying a package through them. Need a few custom suits/slacks.

IMO their suits are very conservatively cut - boxy and baggy - so if you're not a bigger guy it may not be the brand for you.

I also HATE their fucking phone calls and sesonal "check-ins."

And finally, though anecdotal, I bought two shirts from them. One the sleeves were way too short on, meaning I can't wear it without rolling up the sleeves, and the other had regular cuffs when I intended french cuffs, When I called them back they said they were out of both fabrics so I'm out of luck. I'd avoid them - with online MTM shirting and suiting and good brands like Brooks Brothers and Suitsupply for the same or better prices, you're better off with them and avoiding a telemarketer. The young guys they hire are more into sales and not actual clothing, which is why their cuts suck and mistakes are made. If I'm paying a dude to make a suit for me he better know more about it than I do.

PS: They'll also ask for your friends' phone numbers to harass them as well.

Very bad experience. Ordered 6 shirts that took 4 months to arrive. When the shirts finally arrived, they were too big and needed to go back. The purchase was a total loss. I will never do business with them again, and definitely would not give a good review.

Had a horrible experience. Initial fitting was good but the clothes didn't fit and it took 6 months to receive them. They remade some but they never fit well. Very expensive. Sales people lied about delivery time and entered the order incorrectly.

Currently experiencing issues with TJ. Placed an order in September of last year and my clothes still are being carried back and forth between the sales person and myself.

very overpriced. average quality. Problem - if the clothes don't fit, they tell you it is your fault and keep your money. Can't return a bad fit you would not have walked out of a store with because you just don't know how clothes are supposed to fit you. :)
