Actually a pretty classic move. The knit tie is a sartorial staple. Absolutely not office-appropriate, but it's not a disgusting look.

All depends on the type of collar you are wearing. If its a spread collar, which it should be, then just do a half windsor. Make sure you try to tie the tie before you purchase it so that you know when you tie it, its not going to bet huge and bulky.
