JCREW?

I have a finance internship in the summer. As a student I don't have too many dress shirts. I plan on buying massive apparel from a JCREW store at an outlet center.

I'm curious to know why JCREW is not considered in a good light on this forum. I always thought it was respectable. Anyone recommend this or should I consider other places?

Yeah I would agree. J Crew is more boarding school/weekend appropriate than corporate attire. Although if you stick to their higher-end dress shirts in blue or white or even a few pairs of their wool slacks they can be a safe choice. Just avoid anything too loud or patterned and make the majority of your outlet purchases at a more refined shop like Brooks.

Banana Republic outlet stores carry a different line completely than normal Banana stores. Their quality is about three steps down in the outlet stores. Unfortunate but true.

In my view, the "dress shirts" at Banana Republic leave something to be desired; for the same price, I think you'd be better off with Brooks Brothers or Charles Tyrwhitt for the business environment.

You can get extremely nice custom made shirts from Thailand for a fraction of the cost that you'd pay in NYC.

You're still obligated to pick out nice fabric but fit is what is most important in suits/shirts (I'm huge into lifting, so I know how difficult this can get).

Here are two great tailors: http://www.maxwellsclothiers.com/ http://www.dress-for-success.com/

Maxwells rents out hotel rooms across the states where they'll take your measurements and you can pick out fabric.

Please don't do j crew though, you might as well pick up an oversized Geoffry Bean shirt from Marshalls with a pair of boxy kenneth cole reaction dress shoes to match.

I don't know why everyone is hating on J Crew, yes it is certainly preppy, but their clothes tend to be of good quality, definitely better than banana republic, which is honestly of rather poor construction. If you go to J crew and are careful not to buy anything flashy, I don't see why it would be bad. they make plain white and blue shirts like everyone else, and are reasonably priced. as was said, just stick to whites and blues, and if you're feeling adventurous maybe get a basic blue striped, and no one will care
