Small but major habits for improving health and appearance?

What habits or routines have you built that have made the biggest difference for you?

For one I've incorporated at least some fresh fruits, veggies, and nuts in to my daily diet as well as fish oil supplements because I don't eat much fish and I've found skin vibrance and general energy levels to have increased.

I also have included at least 2 30-45 minute cardio sessions per week in addition to my lifting routine that I believe has had a tangible impact on my skin quality and quality of sleep. I like lower impact cardio so I will do either the stair master or incline treadmill (or a mix); I like to be sweating bullets by the end.

Skincare routine has been another important one for me. Another one is taking proper care of my clothes and being meticulous around ironing/steaming my garments.  I also get my favorite pieces altered where needed so they fit very nicely.

Clothing wise I also added a few more essentials to my wardrobe (overcoat, couple of nice pants and shoes) that I found have elevated my game.

To elevate your health and appearance, here are some small but impactful habits based on the most helpful WSO content:

Health Habits:

  1. Diet Improvements:

    • Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish oil supplements (if you don’t eat much fish). These boost skin vibrance, energy levels, and overall health.
    • Opt for a Mediterranean diet or clean eating with less processed food. Focus on whole foods like oatmeal, lean meats, and greens.
    • Limit sugar, sodium, and processed snacks. These can negatively impact your skin and energy.
  2. Exercise Routine:

    • Add consistent aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Even 15-20 minutes of walking, push-ups, or squats daily can make a difference.
    • Include 2-3 cardio sessions weekly (like stair master or incline treadmill) to improve skin quality, sleep, and overall fitness.
    • Strength training or lifting helps maintain muscle tone and boosts metabolism.
  3. Hydration:

    • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated improves skin elasticity and overall energy.
  4. Sleep:

    • Prioritize 6-8 hours of quality sleep. Use blackout curtains, limit screen time before bed, and consider magnesium or melatonin supplements if needed.
  5. Mental Health:

    • Practice gratitude, meditation, or quiet reflection to reduce stress and improve focus.
    • Engage in hobbies or activities that bring joy and relaxation.
  6. Alcohol and Substance Use:

    • Minimize heavy drinking and substance use. If you drink, hydrate in between to reduce dehydration and aging effects.

Appearance Habits:

  1. Skincare Routine:

    • Start with a simple routine: face wash and moisturizer (with SPF) twice daily.
    • Use retinol at night to combat aging and improve skin texture.
    • Avoid SPF products with benzene and opt for non-comedogenic products if prone to blackheads.
  2. Clothing Care:

    • Iron/steam garments meticulously and get favorite pieces tailored for a perfect fit.
    • Invest in wardrobe essentials like an overcoat, quality pants, and shoes to elevate your style.
  3. Grooming:

    • Maintain healthy skin, hair, and teeth. These are foundational to appearance.
    • Use products suited to your skin type and avoid overcomplicating routines.
  4. Posture and Movement:

    • Regular exercise and stretching improve posture, which enhances overall appearance and confidence.

By integrating these habits, you’ll see tangible improvements in both health and appearance over time.
