For BB work, what are small things to know best for dress?
What is best for dress shirt? Point, spread, button down collar? Pocket or no pocket?
Black or brown shoes?
Navy or Gray suits?
Would love to hear some rundowns on wardrobes, and brands/collections? Thanks
Light blue or white shirts are the easiest to match suits & ties with. Point collar for analysts. Associates and above usually wear spread collars. Not a rule of thumb but that’s usually what’s seen. No shirt pocket, you aren’t a 7th grade math teacher. Navy suit with brown belt/shoes is a classic. Grey suit w/ brown belt/shoes looks good but you can pull off black belt/shoes. Charles Tyrwhitt is a one stop shop for everything you’ll need. Might blow out the elbows on the shirts but they usually fix them. Brooks Brothers is a bit more expensive but definitely higher quality than CT.

3 of each color shirt should work. Just need 2-3 nice quality suits (unless WFH)

As somebody who started out with brown shoes - nobody wears brown shoes in (European) corporate finance.
Also don't think that there are any "collar" rules. Except for the fact that Americans tend to be a little more forgiving when it comes to button-down collars.
So brown is a no go in Europe but okay in New York

CT is the place to shop. Usually have good deals too on their shirts. Exactly what was mentioned above is what you should go for in terms of color

It’s slowly easing up. I think a decent amount of banks have allowed dropping the tie, with the caveat that you should always have one at the office in case clients come in. In the summertime some places will let you go more business casual too. I’m hoping that WFH and seeing people’s screaming kids/dingy apartments via Zoom/Skype on a frequent basis may encourage everyone to ease up a bit as well. Turns out the world doesn’t explode if everyone isn’t in the office with a suit and tie on until 1am every night.

I wear 100% wool but that is personal preference - don't think that it matters - get something that fits you
I think as well that shirt with pockets look odd and old fashioned but don't think anyone cares to be honest
For what you wear it's about not standing out (ie nothing too odd nothing to high end)
Is it okay to wear regular loafers (non gamo/gucci) as a first year, or is that too still not a good idea.
Don't pull up in loafers, get AE park aves or 5th aves and call it a day

I think loafers are fine as long as they are not cheap. Loafers can look "tired" faster than most other shoe styles. So you can wear them, just get the very best you can (even if they can't be Ferragamo just yet). So if you can't do that, then get the best lace-ups you can. FYI Allen Edmonds has sales and coupons just about every day now, so you should be able to get some AE loafers at an affordable price.

what about pants. Office is business casual so no suits everyday.
None of these are important as my Exeter Crew hat, NYAC sweatshirt and America's Cup team polo (any boat will do really, whatever you were on)
Let me give you the best price-effective options I used when I was an intern / newly-minted first-year analyst.
Shirt: Whatever was between point and spread which was available from Macy's ($15-20 on sale or clearance). Generally didn't fit well (was "Classic" fit) but did the trick before I learned of the insane sales CT has almost daily. The cheap shirts almost always have pockets for some reason.
Shoes: Cole haan sale shoes from Macy's. Lace-ups not loafers. These lasted quite a while before I switched over to loafers.
Suits: It hurts but I had one suit from Jos. A. Bank which was the most "classic" fit you'll see (ie it was fucking massive on me). My other suit was an off the rack clearance blazer paired with travel-stretch pants from Macy's again.
Now, even after having a good amount of discretionary money, I still aim for CT shirts and Suitsupply suits (~450 each incl. tailoring). Shoes I dish out on w Ferragamo and Prada. Never Gucci again as people have alluded to here given the quality is literal dogshit and your shoes will get holes if you choose to walk with them lol
