Sneakers to work in business casual?

Newer to NYC. I figured people would be more dressy on the east coast but found actually the opposite and see a lot of sneakers at work instead of the usual black or brown leathers. By sneakers I mean nicer sneakers and not weird flashy club sneakers but nonetheless.

Is this normal for a business casual environment in NYC? Not complaining, legitimately asking what is considered work appropriate up here before I show up being "that guy".

I don't like the look but in Europe tons of people in professional services walk around with white sneakers.
