Thoughts on Cheap Watches?

Have always hated the feeling of watches, but need to wear them now to check the time without pulling out my phone. Bought a $20 casio a while ago because I love the look of them and I grew up low-income so I've never seen the appeal of dropping a couple grand on a watch that looks the same to me as a canal street patek.

Kinda concerned now that I've heard so much about watch culture– do people care that much about other people's watches? could i get dinged for wearing a cheap watch? should i just get an apple watch or something?

lotta bankers are douches about watches and just jerk off to the brands. there are still a lot of affordable watches that look great if you are interested. if you like your cheap casio, then no reason to not wear it. casio makes great watches that look very cool like i imagine yours is (there is also a certain cool-ness to rocking a cheap casio that cannot be replicated by a flashy gold watch). my favorite brand for cheap-ish watches that look cool are seikos. but if anyone judges you for wearing a cheap casio, then its not someone you want to be associated with anyway, so don't worry about what others think about your casio.

I’m a prospective business student so can’t really speak on culture with it all, but me and my dad are into watches.
I actually got into building custom Seikos (r/seikomods has some cool customs for reference). A relatively nice automatic movement only runs about $25 and I’ve built 3 for myself, one for my dad, and one for a friend.

That being said, similarly to another comment, look into a Seiko. They look nice (and are nice) and they’re a great value buy. Some other recs of mine are Shinola, not the best value but cool background especially if you’re from the D. I love their story as someone from a similar background. Tissot is great in the mid range as well, as well as Longines and maybe Orient. Could get into used Tag market from there. My dream is an Omega.

Casios are highly regarded with watch guys tho. Not sure about the non-watch guy snobs that buy Rolex for the logo on the face, though.
