Want to buy a tie as a gift to impress
Need to get my friend a really special tie as a thank-you gift. Was thinking of Hermes because he wears them a lot, but I heard that Seigo Katsuragawa makes really nice ties and are worn by those in the know. Also considering Ferragamo or maybe Brioni. I'm a female government lawyer, so I know nothing about ties or the senior management finance executives who wear them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If he wears Hermes ties a lot I would probably lean towards a different option, as he already has a range of them. I have also found that among my peer set, those who like Hermes tend to not like Ferragamo (no rationale as to why, except for style preference). Brioni is good if you are going for the power tie look and I can't comment on Seigo.
If I were you, I would take a look a John Lobb ties. Traditionally a high-end men's shoe company, they only launched their tie line within the past 12 months. I haven't gotten around to purchasing one yet, but If the quality of their shoes are any indication of the quality of their ties, then it should be very good. Very simple styling in a range of colors, so no risk of picking the wrong pattern or something your friend finds offensive. The other benefit of the JL tie would be that he probably doesn't have one, since they are relatively new, so the gift would have a uniqueness as well.
Charvet, Kiton and Isaia are other brands I would throw out as potential options.
Thank you, white collar, for your helpful response! I am definitely looking for a power tie, as my friend is someone who is rather label conscious and dresses to impress. And yes, he has a number of Hermes ties so I suppose one from me is not going to mean a whole lot. Good to know that those who like Hermes tend not to like Ferragamo. Saves me from a costly mistake. I'll take a look at the other brands you mention, Charvet, Kiton, Isaia and John Lobb.
I think his style is also going to depend more on his position in Finance rather than precedent brands he owns...whether he is in Banking, PWM, Trading, Corporate, etc... I'm in banking, so the following opinion may not apply, but I don't think you are going to find a better quality tie than a Ferragamo....I much prefer the silk Ferragamo's are made with to Hermes material. I don't think you can go wrong with something like below, I own it and is a wonderful tie:

What about a Montblanc pen?
He already has a couple of Montblancs. He's not actually in finance per se, but is a lawyer by training who has worked at big Wall St. law firms, as well as investment banks. He is now doing something with respect to investment in Asia. He emulates bankers and dresses like one and is very partial to luxury items.
I would go with a Ferragamo to be honest. Think it is your best bet.

Get him a nice pen, he will use that on a daily basis and be reminded of you. Everytime I get a tie from someone, I thank them and it sits in my closet because it's a tie that I would not personally wear ( I am extremely picky). Then I feel obligated to wear that tie around the one who gave me the tie to show I remember their kind gesture. Just my two cents and I want your gift to stick out. Ties tend to be the go to gift these days.
You can go with Ferragamo and Seigo Katsuragawa and they make a wonderful choice of gift.

I prefer that people don't buy me gifts like books or ties.
If they are not to my taste (frequently the case), they just turn into guilt fixations - do I have to wear this tie next time I see him/her?
Buying consumables (bottle of wine or scotch) would be my recommendations. Don't curse someone else with your impression of what their taste is.
Or else, get them a voucher for a tie at a good store so they can exercise their own taste.
I know people on Wall Street want to buy $$$ brands (how else are you going to show status without pulling down your pants and showing everyone the size of your cock) but you should really look into buying a custom tie for him. You can give him a gift certificate and you both can design it together.

This depends on the timeline you have, but getting something he can't simply get is also worth a consideration. I haven't seen Drake`s Ties in the US and they are very very nice. They have a wide range of styles but i would stick to something basic. There is a place in Napoli/Italy, too called Marinella which is also sweet! If he is tall get an extra long one ;)
