Wearing Suits / Office Attire in IB

Incoming SA at BB in NYC. I’ve interned in IB at a regional as well as at a multifamily PE shop and I can’t seem to understand why everyone feels obligated to wear a suit to the office. Seems like a big waste of time and money (dry cleaners). I know it’s something I’ll have to accept in the industry, but I truly think better work could get done if people were more comfortable.
Having said all this, what’s the best collared white shirt for under $200? I want them to last years.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the discussion around office attire in investment banking (IB) often highlights the importance of professional presentation, which includes wearing suits or formal office attire. This tradition is deeply rooted in the industry's culture, emphasizing professionalism and a certain standard of appearance. While it may seem inconvenient or costly due to dry cleaning expenses, adhering to this dress code is seen as part of the professional commitment in the IB sector.

Regarding your query for the best collared white shirt under $200, the conversation among WSO users suggests a few notable options:

  1. Charles Tyrwhitt Shirts: Frequently mentioned for their good balance between quality and price. They often have deals like 3 for $99, making them a cost-effective choice without compromising on quality. Their shirts are available in various fits, including slim fit, which is preferred by many professionals for a more tailored look.

  2. TM Lewin Super Slim Fit: Another brand highly recommended by users for those seeking a more fitted option. TM Lewin shirts are praised for their fit and quality, especially for individuals who find other brands to be too baggy. They are also known to offer shirts at a reasonable price point, particularly during sales.

  3. Kamakura Shirts: If you're willing to spend a bit more, Kamakura shirts are noted for their exceptional quality and fit. While they might be at the higher end of your budget, they are considered a worthwhile investment for their durability and classic style.

  4. Proper Cloth: For a customizable option, Proper Cloth allows you to tailor your shirt to your exact measurements and preferences. This can be a great way to ensure a perfect fit and choose the details you prefer, from collar style to cuff type.

These brands are well-regarded within the WSO community for their quality, fit, and value, making them solid choices for investment banking professionals looking to build a durable and professional wardrobe.
